Halkidiki – Porto Koufo: The hidden paradise of Sithonia

On the southwestern side of Sithonia, Halkidiki, lies a place that seems to have come out of a painting.

Porto Koufo, the largest and safest natural harbor in Greece, combines rare natural beauty with serenity and authenticity. Its name comes from the word “koufos” – meaning quiet, silent – and perfectly captures its character: a sheltered place, protected from the waves and the wind, which seems to hold within itself the silence of the sea.

Porto Koufo is a natural bay, surrounded by high rocks, which act as natural walls. Thanks to its geomorphology, its waters are always calm, making it the ideal refuge for fishing boats and yachts. From ancient times to the present day, the port has been used as a safe anchorage, and it is said that Thucydides himself knew about it, as he refers to it in the “Peloponnese”.

The small village that spreads around the bay has remained faithful to its traditional character. It does not have the noise and intense tourist development of other areas of Halkidiki, which is why it is a refuge for those seeking tranquility and genuine experiences. In the taverns by the sea you will taste fresh seafood, with local ouzo or tsipouro, while gazing at the lake-like harbor.

Porto Koufo is not for those looking for intense nightlife and crowds. However, it is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy the sea in a more authentic form, to relax and be filled with images of natural beauty. It is the place where all you hear is the waves gently crashing and the whispers of the wind on the rocks.
